THE
WILD WEST
Introducing a new series by Commandant Miniatures:
BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST, a re-creation of the famous exhibitions
of the 1880's

Figures
are converted from old British toys and are cast in solid non-lead metal in
a size similar to Britains Ltd., about 54mm (2-1/4 in.) tall
...........with each marked wherever possible with the original manufacturer's
name plus the CM logo.
Painting is in the brightly enameled old toy style, lead-free,
...........and because of the distinct individuality of both the cowboys and
the plains indians, clothing color variations and differences in war-paint,
horse markings and shield pictographs will be common.
Each figure comes in a gift box with a Story Card giving some background on
the personality and incident portrayed;
...........series plan is to add portrayal of various incidents in the life
of Buffalo Bill, particularly the Wild West exhibitions.
Because small parts could detach and cause a choking hazard,
this series is NOT suggested for small children.
All figures
and animals are individually cast and painted by me, and since they are beginning
to sell fairly briskly, some may be in short supply or temporarily out of stock.
WILLIAM F. "BUFFALO BILL" CODY, 1846-
1917 was the best known American of his time and, arguably, the most famous
person in the world, not only because of his enormously popular Wild West exhibitions
in the U.S. and abroad, but also because of tall tales of his exploits in the
popular theatricals and dime novels of the day. His careers were many- teamster,
soldier, Pony Express rider, buffalo hunter, army scout, actor, and showman.
His character was by no means perfect but he was the popular romantic ideal
of the western hero, who really could ride and shoot with the best and was true
to his word. A brave fighter in the Plains Wars, he nonetheless became a respectful
friend and advocate for the Plains Indians.
1868- Buffalo Hunting
BUFFALO |
 |
The American bison (buffalo) once roamed the Great Plains by the millions.
Hunters, like “Buffalo Bill” Cody were paid by railroad companies to provide
meat for workers laying transcontinental track during the massive post-Civil
War western expansion. Plains Indians hunted the buffalo not just for food
but used virtually all the animal- notably for clothing and shelter- and
were much distressed as the herds rapidly diminished. |

BUFFALO BILL on BUCKSKIN JOE |
 |
A favorite horse, Buckskin Joe, was trained to gallop alongside
the running buffalo and, at the sound of the rifle shot (Bill rarely missed),
spontaneously moved alongside the next buffalo. Joe caused international
embarassment when loaned to the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia during "The
Royal Hunt" hosted by Colonel George Armstrong Custer. At first, the
Duke missed every time but Joe moved on anyhow, giving no chance for additional
attempts. |

MORE BUFFALO HUNTERS |
 |
The American Plains Indians used several methods
for buffalo hunting. One such, and the favorite for Buffalo Bill Cody,
was to ride up alongside the running animal before shooting. In Cody’s
case the weapon was a .50 cal. Springfield rifle nicknamed “Lucretia Borgia”.
The short indian bow, heavily reinforced by sinew, was capable, according
to observers, of projecting an arrow through a buffalo. As trade firearms
became available, a wide variety from flintlocks to repeating rifles were
welcomed.

 |
By 1884, the great buffalo herds were gone, rapidly depleted
by hunting and loss of habitat. The buffalo hunt, using real buffalo, was
re-enacted in the Wild West exhibitions, with Col. Cody and Indians simulating
attack. The entire troupe, buffalo and elk included, toured widely in the
U.S. and Europe. Buffalo from the exhibitions and from Cody's Wyoming ranch
ultimately formed part of today's preserved herds. |

of Summit Springs
TALL BULL and HIS HORSE |
 |
In July 1869, Army Scout “Buffalo Bill” Cody led the Fifth Cavalry in an
attempt to rescue two Swedish women from the camp of the renegade Chief
Tall Bull. Bill shot the Chief and captured his bay horse, who later proved
to be a swift racer. After informing Mrs. Tall Bull (who had just murdered
one of the captive women and wounded the other) of her husband's “cashing
in his mortal chips” he promised her to name the fine horse “Tall Bull”-and
did.

1876- Duel with Yellow Hair, at Hat Creek
YELLOW HAIR in POW-WOW
COSTUME |
 |
Yellow Hair, a sub-chief of the Cheyenne, supposedly gained
his name as the result of scalping a blonde woman. He lost his own hair
in a surprise encounter with Buffalo Bill, after each had exchanged two
shots at close range. An interpreter misunderstood his name as “Yellow Hand”
and such he was called in the 1944 movie “Buffalo Bill”. The Chief, played
by Anthony Quinn, wore an albino buffalo head-dress in one scene, such as
shown on this figure. The movie duel was fought with knives.

YELLOW HAIR and HIS UNFORTUNATE PINTO HORSE
|
 |
After the massacre of Custer and 5 companies of the 7th Cavalry in 1876,
feelings were running high against the Cheyenne. It was then that Buffalo
Bill, scouting ahead of the 5th Cavalry, abruptly came upon Chief Yellow
Hair. Bill’s first shot traversed the Chief’s leg, killing his horse; his
second hit the Chief’s head. Bill, taking his knife, shouted “First scalp
for Custer!” in the only instance of his taking a scalp, but in a scene
frequently re-enacted in his early Wild West exhibitions.

1885 THIRD YEAR OF THE "WILD WEST" EXHIBITIONS- Chief
Sitting Bull's One Appearance.
CHIEF SITTING BULL |
 |
The renowned Sioux chief, organizer of the Custer defeat
of 1876, toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West during the 1885 season.
He had been very taken with Annie Oakley, adopted her as his daughter
and gave her the name “Watanya Cecila” –“Little Sure Shot”.
Bill’s try at rescuing Sitting Bull during the ghost dance unrest of 1890
was thwarted. The Chief was shot by Indian Police during an arrest attempt,
setting off a performance, cued by the gunshot, by a gray trick horse
given to the Chief by Bill. Figure carries shield with
the Chief's personal thunderbird pictograph.

of U.S. FLAG |

PROTOTYPE ONLY
|
Early in a Command Performance in London for Queen Victoria,
May 11, 1887,
a mounted horseman presented before her the U.S. flag, dipping it three
times. The Queen rose and saluted the flag with a bow, the first acknowledgement
of Old Glory by the British Crown since the ill feeling between the two
countries generated by the American Civil War. In the words of Col. Cody’s
autobiography, “There was a wild cheer from everyone in the show, Indians
included, and soon all the audience was on its feet, cheering and waving
flags and handkerchiefs….we never put on a better performance.”

MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH BOW |
 |
These warriors carry short, sinew-reinforced and very powerful bows.
Figures vary in head-dress, warpaint, clothing and
clothing decoration and horse types and horse's "medicine" decorations.
Some have shields with varying pictographs.I try to do no two alike as
the plains warriors were in real life markedly individualistic. |

MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH SHARPS CARBINE |
 |
Captured cavalry carbines, although single shot, were prized as they outranged
the repeating carbines of the day and had excellent stopping power. See

MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH CLUB |
 |
This figure carries a stone-headed club and a Sitting Bull shield and
is similar in appearance to Sitting Bull's nephew, One Bull, at the battle
of Little Big Horn. One Bull never was hired for the Col. Cody's Wild West
however. Available on galloping or rearing pony. |
$35.00
Each |
MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH COUP STICK |
 |
Greatest honor for a plains warrior was not to shoot an enemy from a distance,
or even to strike him with a weapon, but rather to "count coup"
by striking him by hand or with a coup stick, long with a bowed end and
decorated with wrappings and feathers. Only the most accomplished warrior
would attempt this- and would be greatly respected. Shield pictographs,
clothing and horse decorations vary. |
$35.00
Each |
MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH FEATHERED LANCE |
 |
One of the most colorful weapons of the plains indians was the multifeathered
lance, the feathers on a cloth strip tied to the lance shaft. Shield pictographs,
clothing and horse decorations vary. Rearing or galloping ponies available. |
$35.00
Each |
MOUNTED INDIAN
WITH WINCHESTER CARBINE |
 |
Lever action repeating carbines such as the "bright boy" (brass
receiver) Winchesters carried by these figures were widely available to
plains indians by barter or capture. Many spent bullets were found at the
Little Big Horn battle site but not many arrow heads. Figures and ponies
vary in painting of clothing, warpaint and other decorations. |
$35.00
Each |
MOUNTED INDIAN WITH SHARPS RIFLE |
|
The longer range rifle with its greater accuracy was an excellent weapon
for both hunting and warfare. Its use by U.S. Army Infantry soldiers on
the plains made them particularly respected by the indians- when soldiers
could catch up to them. These figures show wide variations in painting of
both horses and riders. |
$35.00 |
MOUNTED INDIAN WITH PISTOL |
|
I haven't found a photo of a Wild West exhibition indian armed with a
pistol but on the plains many were so armed, as with this Colt Dragoon.
Painting of ponies and riders will vary. |
|
"7. MISS ANNIE OAKLEY"
| WING-SHOOTING |
 |
Petite Annie Oakley, a phenomenal sharpshooter, toured the
U.S. and Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, earning acclaim and marksmanship
metals. She so impressed Chief Sitting Bull that he adopted her as his daughter
and gave her the nickname “Little Sure Shot”. She was complimented by Queen
Victoria who told her, after a Command Performance during the 1887 tour,
that she was “a clever little girl”. Annie’s fame lives on in movies, TV
shows and the Broadway hit “Annie Get Your Gun”. |

In the years following our Civil War, the term
“cow-boy” had a meaning, to the average American, that suggested a disreputable
person of crude and violent habits. When Buffalo Bill began, in his Wild
West exhibitions showing these brave and hardy men riding , roping, bronco-busting
and showing other western skills, they began to attain respect. They were
the heroes, along with Bill, in the Deadwood Stagecoach and Settler’s Cabin
Rescues of the Exhibition.

The Deadwood stage, the one used for years in Buffalo Bill's

Shirt is shown, weapon in hand, ready to act in the action-packed tableau
“Attack on the Settler’s Cabin” in which the settler and his wife would
be rescued at the last minute by Col. Cody and the Cowboys.

| MOUNTED PLAINS INDIAN WARRIOR POINTING |
 |
The Hollywood image of native Americans as wildly galloping
brilliantly feathered plains warriors came directly from Buffalo Bill’s
immensely popular Wild West exhibitions, which employed many plains tribesmen,
mostly Lakota Sioux.
Later film images of a brave but overwhelmed native American culture, proud,
hardy and independent also grew in part from exposure of the general public
to the Exhibition’s Indian Village, its performers and their families, and
from Buffalo Bill’s advocacy for decent treatment of American Indians.

INDIAN

 |
One reviewer, watching an early movie of the Wild

It is unlikely that Bill and cowboys ever rescued a settler's

segment was popular in the exhibitions for years. In some ways this illustrates
the American west's love of a "tall" tale, a genre in which Buffalo
Bill excelled. |

BOWMAN
ATTACKING |
 |
This figure is a reproduction of an English toy of the post-WW II era,
painted as authentically as I could manage. It reflects the continuing interest
in the "red indian" in England (and other European countries)
that was fuelled initially by the popularity of Col. Cody's touring exhibitions.

sinew-reinforced bow, more practical for horseback use, favored by the Plains
Indians. |

ISHAM |
 |
Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, is shown near the
end of his career, his hair turned white, rearing up on a favorite horse
“Isham”, saluting his Wild West audience, as he did at the end of each performance.
The renowned hunter, scout, Indian fighter (and good friend to Indians),
marksman, showman and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient met financial
setbacks late in life and had to auction belongings, including Isham. A
friend bought the horse for $150.00 and returned him to Bill. |
